6 Invisible Challenges That Affect Students

1) Sensory Processing Issues: Lights, noise, crowded lecture halls, and things others can easily ignore can feel overwhelming and overstimulating, making it hard to focus or even stay in the room.

hard to focus or even stay in the room.

2) Executive Dysfunction: This is not laziness, just your brain struggling to start or complete tasks, even when you want to. Simple things like beginning an assignment or organizing your time can feel unusually difficult.

3) Brain Fog: Brain fog is struggling to think clearly, remember words, or process information. It can feel like your mind is slowed down or clouded, especially during lectures or exams.

4) Social Fatigue: Not just “being shy”! Interacting with people can drain your energy quickly, making long days on campus, group work, or even casual conversations exhausting.

5) Chronic Pain: Sitting through lectures, walking across campus, or staying in one position for too long can be physically painful, even if no one else can see it.

6) Masking: Constantly pretending to be “fine” or hiding symptoms to fit in. It takes effort to act like nothing is wrong, and over time, that pressure becomes exhausting.
